“Moms of boys got it right to within 1 degree,” Begley explained, but “moms of girls underestimated what their daughters could do by 9 degrees, even though there are no differences in the motor skills of infant boys and girls.” (emphasis added) In a 2009 Newsweek article, Sharon Begley wrote about a study in which mothers were asked to estimate how steep a slope their 11-month-olds could crawl down. Could our beliefs be causing us to make girls smaller, slower, and less powerful? but absent from most discussions is the possibility that a social construct like, I don’t know, maybe patriarchy is playing a role. We’ve all heard the immutable biological factors - skeletal structure, testosterone, lung capacity, etc. This got me thinking about the carved-in-stone “reality” that the vast majority of men are supposedly bigger, faster, and stronger than the vast majority of women. They not only took on the 19,974-foot high Huayna Potosi Mountain in Bolivia but did so while dressed like, um… well, women (read: traditional Aymara clothing). Recently, a group of Aymara women amazed the world by doing something unexpected.

No, she sets out to not only make the best of her situation but to prove that she’s capable, and that’s what won me over. It also helps that Zoe takes it all in stride as a part of life instead of burning with rage at the unfairness of it all. I think it may be because it takes place in such an innocent, fairy-tale-like setting that I enjoyed it so much. Typically, I’m not fond of the high school drama scene, but this is the exception that made it fun to read. I enjoyed going behind the scenes of an amusement park, especially with all the drama and backstabbing going what is supposed to be Fairyland. How Zoe Made Her Dreams (Mostly) Come True is a cute, quirky read. ◆ A copy was provided by Harper Collins for review ◆Īfter having read Sarah Strohmeyer’s Smart Girls Get What They Want, I knew that I was in for another fun, humor-filled read. Meanwhile, it does keep you awfully busy. I’m thrilled, and all of us associated with the play are thrilled. Thomas Wolfe wrote a detailed description of it in ‘You Can’t Go Home Again.’ I must say he told the truth. Then I get a call from a stranger saying ‘This is So-and-So, of the B.B.C.’! It’s the flush of success. “It’s just incredible! I had the number changed, and gave it to, roughly, twelve people. “The telephone has become a little strange thing with a life of its own,” she told us, calmly enough. At her request, we met her in a midtown restaurant, so that she could get away from her telephone. We had a talk recently with Lorraine Hansberry, the twenty-eight-year-old author of the hit play “A Raisin in the Sun.” Miss Hansberry is a relaxed, soft-voiced young lady with an intelligent and pretty face, a particularly vertical hairdo, and large brown eyes, so dark and so deep that you get lost in them. And upon further reflection, describing this book as moving pawns is perhaps less than fair considering the many, many twists and turns that Sanderson plotted throughout RoW. Sanderson continues to grow this series, that ranks as one of my favorites, both in depth and scope. Even though RoW is a weighty twelve hundred pages or so, I didn’t want this adventure to end. In this case, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Usually when I make the aforementioned statement in a review regarding a book feeling like a placeholder it is typically with a negative connotation. In many ways this fourth installment has the feel of pawns being maneuvered, with significant emphasis being placed on character development and worldbuilding. If you’re a fan of The Stormlight Archive series you will positively love Rhythm of War ( RoW). Apart from the incessant stalking, it is the conditionals–the contingencies–that most frustrate Joe, a scientific journalist. I close my eyes and see you as you were last night in the rain, across the road from me, with the unspoken love between us as strong as steel cable.”) Worst of all, Jed’s version of love comes to seem a distortion of Joe’s feelings for Clarissa.
